How it works

How Maharashtra road tax is calculated

Road tax on a petrol car in Maharashtra is 11–13% of the ex-showroom price (2026) depending on the price band, on top of the ₹600 registration fee, ₹1100 HSRP plate and ₹1500 hypothecation if financed.

  1. 1

    Select your state

Choose the state where the vehicle will be registered. Road tax rates vary significantly — from 4% in some states to 20%+ in others.

  2. 2

    Enter ex-showroom price

Input the ex-showroom price of the vehicle from the dealer's price list or manufacturer's website.

  3. 3

Choose vehicle type and fuel type

Select whether it's a car or two-wheeler, and the fuel type — petrol, diesel, CNG or electric. EVs may qualify for exemptions in some states.

  4. 4

    View the on-road price breakdown

The calculator shows road tax, RTO registration charges, HSRP plate charges, hypothecation fee (if financed) and the full on-road price.

Maharashtra exempts electric vehicles from road tax entirely — an EV pays ₹0 here. Maharashtra caps the road-tax component at ₹30,00,000, so the rate stops biting above roughly ₹2.3076923 Cr. A vehicle registered to a company pays 1.25× these rates.

Two-wheeler rate bands by engine cc, not price. MV tax capped at ₹30L since July 2025.

Maharashtra road tax FAQs

Maharashtra bands road tax by price, so a petrol car pays 11–13% of the ex-showroom price under the MH RTO. At ₹12,00,000 the rate is 12%, which is ₹1,44,000. On top of that you pay a ₹600 registration fee and ₹1100 for the HSRP plate — ₹1,700 in fixed charges — plus ₹1500 for hypothecation if the vehicle is financed.

Yes. Maharashtra exempts electric vehicles from road tax entirely, so an EV registered under the MH RTO pays ₹0 in road tax against 12% for an equivalent petrol car. You still pay the ₹600 registration fee and ₹1100 HSRP charge.

Maharashtra charges 12% on a ₹12,00,000 petrol car and 14% on the diesel equivalent — a difference of about ₹24,000. Diesel is taxed higher in most states as an emissions measure.

Yes. Road tax is a state levy, so re-registering a vehicle in Maharashtra means paying Maharashtra road tax on the vehicle's depreciated value, and claiming a refund of the unused portion from the state you left. Apply through the MH RTO with Form 28 (NOC), Form 27 and the original registration certificate. Budget several weeks — the refund from the origin state is usually the slow half.

Yes, through the central Vahan portal (vahan.parivahan.gov.in), which handles MH RTO payments. For a new vehicle the dealer normally pays road tax on your behalf and builds it into the on-road price — worth checking the breakup line by line, because it is the single largest addition over ex-showroom.
